I love Jennifer Aniston

Honestly, I didn’t used to. I think she’s a good comedy actress, but she wasn’t on my list of ‘People I Think Are Awesome And Would Like To Have A Drink With.’ OK, that list doesn’t actually exist, that would be weird. But you know what I mean, she was just an actress who didn’t make much of an impression on me.

And then she’s interviewed in Allure magazine and she says this:

“I don’t like [the pressure] that people put on me, on women — that you’ve failed yourself as a female because you haven’t procreated. I don’t think it’s fair. You may not have a child come out of your vagina, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t mothering — dogs, friends, friends’ children.

This continually is said about me: that I was so career-driven and focused on myself; that I don’t want to be a mother, and how selfish that is.

I have a lot of friends who decided not to have children, who can’t have children, or are trying but are having a difficult time. There’s all sorts of reasons why children aren’t in people’s lives, and no one has the right to assume. It’s quite rude, insulting and ignorant.”

And at the same time as jumping up and down with delight at the fact that there’s someone so high profile out there saying these things, it also slightly breaks my heart that in 2014 an incredibly successful, talented woman, is still having to say this.

But she didn’t just say that either. She also pointed out that it’s not cool to tell women that they shouldn’t worry about being talked about in this way, or that they should just ignore the people who make out that not being a mother is somehow failing.

‘But when it’s suggested to Aniston that maybe she just lets the insinuations roll off her back after so many years of hearing them, she says, “No. Even saying it gets me a little tight in my throat.”‘

It’s like that thing that you hear – don’t teach girls how to avoid being raped, teach boys how not to rape. Don’t teach women to grow a thicker skin when it comes to being judged on their motherhood status, teach people not to judge women on their motherhood status.

OBVIOUSLY I’m not equating judgemental people with rapists, I was just trying to make my point with reference to a recent topical campaign.

Anyway, yay Jennifer Aniston.

  1. Yay!
selfish if you don’t, selfish if you use IVF (designerbaby), selfish if you adopt (buying a baby),gah. Not cool. Not in 2014.
